LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.43 g, 2 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with a griffin springing right on the bowl; behind neck guard, A; below chin, Φ. Rev. ΥEΛHTΩN Lion walking right; above, dolphin right between I and Φ. HN Italy 1307. Williams 444 (O221/R313). McClean 1459 and pl. 46, 11 (same dies). SNG Ashmolean 1334 (same dies). SNG Lockett 565 (same dies). Lightly toned and of wonderful early Hellenistic style. About extremely fine.
